Krabi, Thailand
The uninhabited island from “The Beach”: limestone walls, an emerald lagoon and one of the most famous bays on Earth. Here’s how to see it right — and when to go before the crowds.
Why go
Koh Phi Phi Leh is the smaller, wilder sister of Phi Phi Don: a ring of sheer limestone cliffs with no hotels, roads or residents. Its west-facing Maya Bay became world-famous after the film The Beach (2000) — and was then loved almost to death.
The bay was closed from 2018 to 2022 so its coral and blacktip reef sharks could recover. Today visits are managed: boats land at the back of the island, you walk a boardwalk to the beach, swimming is not allowed, and the bay closes every year in August and September. It is still one of the most spectacular places in Southeast Asia — you just need to plan it well.

Where to go
Every classic tour stops at most of these.
Phi Phi Leh Maya Bay
The world-famous bay from “The Beach”: a cove of white sand surrounded by 100-metre limestone cliffs, now protected and reached by boardwalk.
Phi Phi Leh Pileh Lagoon
An emerald lagoon enclosed by towering cliffs — the main swimming stop on most Phi Phi Leh tours.
Phi Phi Leh Viking Cave
A sea cave known for its old ship drawings and the swiftlet nests harvested for bird's nest soup — seen from the boat.
Phi Phi Leh Loh Samah Bay
The quiet bay behind Maya Bay where boats now dock — with a pier, a boardwalk and good snorkelling nearby.

When to go
The dry season, November to April, brings calm, clear water and the most reliable boat trips. December to March is peak season — beautiful but busy, so pick an early departure.
From May to October the southwest monsoon can make the crossing rough, and Maya Bay itself is closed every year from 1 August to 30 September. Tours still run in those months, but they skip the bay.

Good to know
No. Swimming has been banned since the bay reopened, to protect the coral and the blacktip reef sharks that breed there. You can walk on the beach and paddle up to about knee depth.
Every year from 1 August to 30 September for the monsoon season and reef recovery, reopening on 1 October. Dates can shift slightly, so check before you book. Tours keep running in those months but skip the bay.
The Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park fee is around 400 THB per foreign adult. Many tours include it; with a private longtail you usually pay in cash at the park booth. Check your tour’s inclusions.
By boat only. Day trips leave from Phuket (about 1–1.5 hours by speedboat), Krabi/Ao Nang (about 45 minutes) and Phi Phi Don (about 20–30 minutes by longtail). Boats land at Loh Samah Bay and you walk a short boardwalk to the beach.
As early as possible. Early-bird tours that reach Maya Bay around opening time beat most day-trippers from Phuket and Krabi, who usually arrive late morning.
Krabi is closer, so you spend less time on the boat. Phuket has more departures and hotel pickups. If you’re staying on Phi Phi Don, a longtail tour is the cheapest and most flexible option.
